VA Community Care: a clear path to asking about treatment
If you are a veteran considering care outside VA, understanding the referral process can make the next step less confusing. ARC can discuss adult treatment options, while your VA care team determines eligibility and the required community care referral.

The VA referral comes before treatment
Discuss the right level of support
ARC offers adult IOP and PHP. In-person and telehealth IOP options can be discussed, but services and format need to match clinical needs and VA authorization. Detox and residential services are provided by Ona Treatment Center, a separately licensed partner, with separate arrangements.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Yuba CityScheduled group and individual treatment several days a week; no overnight stay.
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)More daily structure than IOP; return home at night.
- Detox and residential care through our partner, Ona Treatment CenterDetox and residential care are provided by Ona Treatment Center, a separately licensed partner, not ARC.
A practical sequence
Ask the VA care team about eligibility and referral for community care.
Confirm what the approved referral authorizes and how ARC should receive it.
Contact ARC to discuss clinical fit, current availability and the next steps before treatment begins.
You can use the Free, Confidential Assessment to request a conversation while clarifying these steps. It does not replace VA approval.
Questions you may be asking
No. An approved VA referral is required before care begins, alongside appropriate clinical and scheduling arrangements.
Call 988 and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line. For a medical emergency or immediate danger, call 911 rather than waiting for an intake response.
Privacy and the assessment request
The Free, Confidential Assessment requests contact from ARC's admissions team. It is not a diagnosis or an emergency service. Submitting it does not commit you to treatment, and insurance information is optional.
For information about ARC's published policies, read our Privacy Policy and Notice of Privacy Practices.
